Brigadier General Tilghman has a memorial statue at Vicksburg national Military Park. Ha died in the battle of champion hill. This is his story….
General Tilghman was a young heathenistic man with short stature. He was often mistaken to be a weak person because of his size but Tilghman always prove people wrong by showing bravery and strength. He was just a simple carpenter who had never really done anything worth talking about in his life.
One day some recruiters came to town looking for some new soldiers. They watched people as they went through their daily lives, out of all of the people in the town Tilghman stood out the most. They saw that he had plenty of the good qualities that a soldier should have. They approached him and asked him if he had ever considered joining the army. Tilghman had never thought about joining the army but as the recruiter went on talking about it the thought of this seemed like a good idea, he felt that he would be a great asset to the American army.
When he got in the army his showed the same qualities that he showed when he was discovered by the recruiters. He quickly rose in the ranks fairly quickly and the eventually became Brigadier General Tilghman. One day Tilghman got a message from his commander; it said that they needed him to lead the army in a dangerous mission. He was to lead the military in the battle of champion hill. He knew that this mission would be extremely dangerous, but Tilghman never wanted to pass up a challenge, this was his downfall.
Tilghman said goodbye to his wife and children and set out for the battle site he didn’t know that when he exited the door that would be the last time they see each other.
General Tilghman was killed in the battle even though the battle was won the loss of a valiant soldier.
His Children had a statue erected in his honor. It depicts a scene of him getting off his horse and unfastening the reins.
